:: Traveling to La Ventana::

By Airplane: Alaska Airlines offers service from Los Angeles (LAX) direct to La Paz (LAP). Flights leave on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from LAX. You'll be in La Paz in the early afternoon...plenty of time to stock up on groceries at the supermercado, make the short 30minute drive to La Ventana, and have a cold Pacifico while enjoying the sunset on the beach. Or you can fly into San Jose del Cabo (SJD) but then you'll have a 2.5hr drive to get to La Ventana.

All the usual car rental agencies are available...Dollar, Budget, Hertz, National. It is best to reserve a rental car ahead of time which you can do online. You can also hire a taxi right at the airport. Taxi fares run about $80 - $90 oneway to La Venatana which you can split between two people.

OR....

By Car:

It is a beautiful drive by car!  Once you cross the border there are lovely places to camp or hotels all along the way.  Give yourself at least 3 days to make the trip from the US border to La Paz. Don't drive at night because the cows like to sleep in the road because it is warm. The roads are not too bad, they have pot holes here and there and in general have no shoulder. The traffic is light, but keep your eyes open for semi trucks and busses coming around the tight corners in the mountains!

San Quentin, San Ignacio, Mulege & Loreto are all great places along the way to visit and there are La Pinta Hotels in each of these towns to stay at along the way.

It's a good idea to get your tourist card ahead of time from a travel club. It will save you time and hassle at the border. You will also need to get Mexican car insurance which you can get from a travel club as well.

Driving directions from La Paz Airport:

Exit the airport parking lot and take a right. Take another right at the big intersection with the main highway. Go past the big Whale tail sculpture and follow the signs to the cargo route instead of El Centro (city center). The cargo route will bear right and go past a big government housing project and a church.

At the four way stop light take a left and get into the right hand lane. To go directly to La Ventana and bypass the city take an immediate right about 1/4 mile. (To go to the supermercado...continue down the road and you'll see Soriana's on the left.)
At the stop sign take a right, the road will travel across the arroyo and through a junkyard (not too pretty here, but just wait!) After the junkyard, it's open range for 20 minutes or so. Take great care to watch for cows on the road! At the bottom of the really really long hill take a left at the crossroad where all the touristy signs are.

Once you come to La Ventana, you will cross over 2 speed bumps. At the 3rd speed bump take a right and then an immediate left. You will see the New Wind banner on our beachhouse. Park on the road by the fence and come on in, the beach is waiting!

If you do go into La Paz to go to Soriana's Supermercado...instead of backtracking, just take the road that goes past the Pemex gas station directly to La Ventana (if Soriana's is on your right and the Pemex is on your left, take a left turn at the 4 way stoplight and you'll be on the right road) Just stay on that road and it will take you through a business district and then across the arroyo and through the junkyard and you'll be on your way!

Just after the gas station you will start to go up a hill and around a corner, first you will see a pedestrian crossing sign and then a school crossing sign, turn right at the school crossing sign. Go down this road and follow the green signs to Los Planos.
